George Morland, watercolour of horse and owner. Signed on top bar of the gate, dated 1794 on the bottom bar, name of the horse and latin numerals for 30 on the brace bar. Generously framed in maple. Painting 40×25 centimetres. Frame: 67×60 cms. A very personal painting showing the regard and mutual affection both of the owner and of the horse and the dog. A very moving and striking painting. Morland made his living by travelling in the countryside accepting commissions of which this is one, shown by the quality of the draughtsmanship. He also knocked out hasty oil painting sketches as a cheaper line on his travels around the shires of farmyard scenes, normally with animals.
